There are six Golden Guernsey goats grazing on the scree slope.
In recent years the scree has become overgrown with bramble, which is shading out the unique flora. Goats love to eat bramble, bracken and scrub and should be ideal for controlling the vegetation and restoring a natural balance. Golden Guernseys are a native breed, meaning that they are very hardy, living outside in all seasons, and are ideally suited to this habitat.
This is a partnership between Mossy Oaks, the Friends of Pontesford and Earls Hill, and Shropshire Wildlife Trust. We hope the goats will return the scree to an invaluable habitat for species including the grayling butterfly.
The area the goats graze is being controlled using NoFence collars. This means that the collars create invisible electric boundaries you cannot see. This allows us to graze the otherwise inaccessible slopes and target specific areas of ecological need.
Your dog must be kept on a lead in the area of the scree. Please do not approach or feed the goats. This will keep them safe and allow them to carry out their valuable work.
